🌴 Vice City in GTA 6 vs. the 2002 classic: every confirmed change
Vice City returns after 24 years — modern-day, no longer 1986. Every confirmed district compared to the original, from Vice Beach to Little Cuba.
Same name, different city
Vice City is back after 24 years — but this is a rebuild, not a remaster. The 2002 game froze Miami in 1986: neon, pastel suits, a compact two-island map. GTA 6’s Vice City is modern-day, sits inside the much larger State of Leonida, and is one of six confirmed regions rather than the whole map (how the full map breaks down).
Confirmed districts, old and new
Everything below is from official material (trailers, screenshots, site copy) — our locations index tracks each one with sources:
- Vice Beach — the art-deco oceanfront strip, the Ocean Drive postcard. The 2002 equivalent (Ocean Beach/Vice Point) was the game’s icon; it returns as the city’s glamour face.
- Downtown Vice City — a proper modern skyline this time; 2002’s downtown was a handful of blocks.
- Vice City Design District — new, no 2002 equivalent: a gallery-and-murals quarter that reads as Rockstar’s Wynwood.
- Little Cuba — new by name: the Little Havana analog. The 2002 game’s Little Havana/Little Haiti districts are the clear ancestors.
- Port of Vice City — a working industrial port; 2002’s docks were a mission backdrop, not a district.
- Vice Memorial Park and a dozen more named places — parks, causeways, and civic buildings that give the city everyday texture the 1986 version never had — right down to pro sports teams like the Manatees and Narcos.
What actually changed
The 2002 Vice City was a period piece — the whole game was an ’80s crime-movie homage. GTA 6 keeps the geography’s DNA (beach strip, causeways, port, Latin quarters) and moves it to now: smartphones, social feeds, modern skyline. If you’re coming back after two decades, expect recognition, not memory-matching — street layouts are new, and the fiction has aged 40 years with the rest of us.
The story is new too: Jason and Lucia’s Bonnie-and-Clyde arc, not Tommy Vercetti’s rise. Vice City is the stage, not the plot.

Frequently asked questions
Is GTA 6 set in Vice City?
Yes — Vice City is the central metropolis of GTA 6, but it's one part of the larger State of Leonida, Rockstar's take on Florida. Six named regions are confirmed beyond the city itself.
Is GTA 6's Vice City the same map as GTA Vice City (2002)?
No. It's a rebuilt, modern-day Vice City — new districts, new geography, present-day setting. The 2002 game was set in 1986; GTA 6 is contemporary. Names and vibe return; the map does not.
Is Vice City based on Miami?
Yes, and it has been since 2002 — art-deco beach strip, pastel neon, Latin-Caribbean street culture. The GTA 6 version doubles down with confirmed analogs like the Design District and Little Cuba.
How big is Vice City in GTA 6?
Rockstar hasn't published dimensions. What's confirmed is scope: Vice City is one of six named regions in a state-sized map, so the city is bigger than 2002's standalone island layout by any reasonable reading.
