🐊 Is GTA 6 set in Florida? Leonida vs the real Sunshine State

Officially it's Leonida. The real-Florida parallels behind every confirmed region — Miami, the Keys, the Everglades — and why Rockstar fictionalizes.

Honesty note: GTA 6 isn't out yet. This guide is analysis from trailers and Rockstar's design history — clearly labeled, never presented as tested fact. It becomes a verified, tested guide at launch.

The official answer vs the obvious one

Rockstar never says the word “Florida.” Officially, GTA 6 is set in the state of Leonida — a fictional state with its own geography, flag, and history. Unofficially: it’s Florida the way GTA 5’s San Andreas was California — a satirical remix so recognizable that denying it would be sillier than confirming it. Everything below labels which is which.

Region by region: the real-world parallels

Our analysis, consistent with how we map it on the regions page:

Every confirmed place in each region is pinned with its source on the interactive map.

Why Rockstar fictionalizes at all

The fake-state trick is load-bearing: it buys satire without lawsuits (real brands become parodies), geography that serves gameplay (compressing hundreds of miles into one drivable state, adding hills Florida doesn’t have), and freedom to exaggerate the culture — which, Florida being Florida, the trailers barely needed to.

What we deliberately don’t do

Some sites publish “real location vs GTA 6” photo matchups built on leaked footage. We don’t host leaked material — our comparisons stay to what’s in trailers and official screenshots, and anything sourced from leak-era documentation is labeled unconfirmed on the map, dashed pin and all. The full sourcing rules are on the locations hub.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6 set in Florida?

Officially it's the fictional state of Leonida — Rockstar never says the word Florida. Unofficially, it's Florida the way GTA 5's San Andreas was California: a satirical remix so recognizable that denying it would be sillier than confirming it.

Is Vice City based on Miami?

Yes — Vice City has been Rockstar's Miami analog since 2002, and the trailers double down: art-deco beach strip, pastel neon, Latin-Caribbean street culture, a working port.

What real places are GTA 6's regions based on?

Our analysis: Leonida Keys are the Florida Keys, Grassrivers is the Everglades (the name nods to 'river of grass'), Port Gellhorn is the industrial Gulf coast, Ambrosia is the Lake Okeechobee farm belt, and Mount Kalaga National Park is Leonida's biggest liberty — real Florida is famously flat.

Why doesn't Rockstar use real city names?

The fictional-state trick is load-bearing: it buys satire without lawsuits, geography that serves gameplay (a whole state compressed into one drivable map, hills Florida doesn't have), and freedom to exaggerate the culture.
