How to read these numbers

Rockstar has never published an official map size for any GTA — every figure below is a community measurement, made by fans scaling the in-game world, and methodologies differ (land only vs land + water is the big one). Treat them as good-faith approximations that are right about the ordering and loose on the decimals. That honesty rule is the whole site.

The mainline maps, measured by the community

Three things worth noticing:

• The “smaller” entries weren’t steps back. GTA IV’s Liberty City measures under half of San Andreas — and felt bigger than it measures, because density beats acreage. Remember that when judging Leonida.
• Each console era’s flagship roughly tripled its era’s start. PS2 era: 3 → 14. HD era: 6 → 49 (with water).
• GTA 5’s number does double duty — it’s also GTA Online’s map, which is why it’s the reference point in every GTA 6 headline.

So how big is Leonida?

Officially: unknown. Rockstar has confirmed the shape of the game — the state of Leonida, six named regions, two coasts and an island chain, every one pinned with sources on our interactive map — but no map, no mileage. Community triangulation from trailers and leak-era material consistently estimates 1.5–2× GTA 5, which would make Leonida the largest world in series history by any measure. That’s an estimate and it stays labeled as one until Rockstar publishes the real map — full reasoning in the map-size breakdown and the GTA 5 head-to-head.

The direct answer to “what’s the biggest GTA map?”

Today: GTA 5’s southern San Andreas. On November 19, 2026 — if the community estimates are even half right — the answer becomes Leonida. For context beyond the series, Red Dead Redemption 2’s frontier measures in the same class as GTA 5’s land area; how GTA 6 compares to that world is its own comparison.

Size was never the point

The series’ best-loved map (ask five fans, get three votes for Vice City) is also its second-smallest. What made each map land was identity — and a state built from neon metropolis, swamp, keys, port and farmland is the biggest identity swing Rockstar has ever taken. When the official map drops at launch, this table gets a measured Leonida row with a source, same day — the news feed will carry it first.
