🤠 GTA 6 vs RDR2: map size, world density & what six more years buys

Red Dead Redemption 2 is Rockstar's benchmark world. How GTA 6's confirmed scope compares — community-measured sizes, simulation depth, and honest unknowns.

Honesty note: GTA 6 isn't out yet. This guide is analysis from trailers and Rockstar's design history — clearly labeled, never presented as tested fact. It becomes a verified, tested guide at launch.

Why RDR2 is the right yardstick

Forget GTA 5 for a second — it’s a 2013 game. Red Dead Redemption 2 (2018) is the most recent open world Rockstar has shipped, built by the same studios on the previous generation of the same tech. Whatever GTA 6 is, it’s what comes after RDR2. That makes this the honest comparison, and the trailers keep inviting it: wetlands, wildlife, weather, mud.

Size: measured vs unmeasured

The acreage question is covered in our GTA 5 vs GTA 6 breakdown; the more interesting fight is below.

The real benchmark: simulation, not square miles

RDR2’s world set the standard GTA 6 has to beat, and none of it was acreage:

The honest verdict (for now)

RDR2 remains the deepest world Rockstar has shipped, and GTA 6 hasn’t proven anything yet — trailers are marketing, not measurements. But the confirmed scope (a full state, two coasts, an ecosystem-heavy swamp region) plus six more years of development is exactly the trajectory that produced RDR2 in the first place. We’ll replace every expectation on this page with tested observations the week the game is in hand — tracked on the news feed as always.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6's map bigger than RDR2's?

Unconfirmed. RDR2's map is community-measured at around 29 square miles of land; GTA 6's is unmeasured, with fan estimates of 1.5–2 times GTA 5 — which, if right, would make Leonida comfortably larger. Estimate, clearly labeled.

Will GTA 6 be as detailed as RDR2?

RDR2 set the bar — NPCs with schedules and memories, a functioning ecosystem of around 200 species, weather that affects play. GTA 6's trailers signal the same ambitions (wildlife, storm skies, crowds), but how deep the simulation goes is unconfirmed until the game is in hand.

Does GTA 6 have wildlife like RDR2?

The signals are everywhere in official material — gators in the swamp, wading birds, panthers — and every confirmed species is tracked on our wildlife page. Whether GTA 6 ships a full predator/prey ecosystem like RDR2's is not yet confirmed.

What will GTA 6 do that RDR2 didn't?

Modern-city density above all: Trailer 2's street crowds exceed anything RDR2 attempted, plus high-rise verticality, interiors and nightlife venues — and a two-protagonist story structure RDR2 never tried.
