🌴 GTA 6 vs the original Vice City: what's back, what's bigger, what's gone

24 years separate GTA Vice City (2002) and GTA 6's return to the city. The setting, map scope, characters and returning brands compared — confirmed vs leaked, labeled.

Honesty note: GTA 6 isn't out yet. This guide is analysis from trailers and Rockstar's design history — clearly labeled, never presented as tested fact. It becomes a verified, tested guide at launch.

Two games, one city, 24 years

Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) built Rockstar’s neon Miami — 1986, Tommy Vercetti, a city you could cross in a couple of minutes that still defined an era. GTA 6 goes back on November 19, 2026, and the honest way to compare them is category by category, confirmed facts first.

Setting: 1986 period piece vs modern day

The original was a decade piece — pastel suits, a radio full of 1986. GTA 6 is contemporary Vice City: the official trailers are saturated with smartphones, social media and current-model traffic. The year question has its own guide — when is GTA 6 set? The 80s isn’t gone entirely, though: the pre-order Vintage Vice City Pack is an explicitly 1980s-themed cosmetic set — retro outfits, a 1955 Vapid Stanier, weapon skins and a garage.

Scope: one city vs a state

Vice City (2002) was a city — two islands, beaches, an airport. GTA 6’s Vice City is the anchor of Leonida, a whole fictional state: the Leonida Keys, swamp counties, Port Gellhorn and more, with 62 sourced locations already mapped. No official square-mileage exists for either — the numbers debate lives in every GTA map compared.

Leads: one enforcer vs a Bonnie-and-Clyde pair

Tommy Vercetti was a single mob-movie protagonist. GTA 6 runs dual protagonists — Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, a criminal couple, both confirmed playable. Vercetti himself is not confirmed to appear in any form, and Rockstar has historically kept its 2001–2004-era characters out of the modern universe.

Frequently asked questions

Is GTA 6 set in the same Vice City as the 2002 game?

Same fictional city, rebuilt from scratch. GTA 6's Vice City is part of the new state of Leonida and is a modern-day reimagining — it is not the 1986 map upgraded. Rockstar treats its 3D-era and current-era cities as separate universes.

Is GTA 6 set in the 80s like Vice City was?

No. Vice City (2002) was a 1986 period piece; GTA 6 is contemporary — phones, social media and modern cars are all over the official trailers. The 80s nostalgia lives on in the pre-order bonus, the Vintage Vice City Pack.

Is Tommy Vercetti in GTA 6?

Not confirmed, and Rockstar's universes make a literal return unlikely. The leads are new: Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos. Official pre-order material does wink at the 2002 game with retro-themed bonus cosmetics.

How much bigger is GTA 6's map than Vice City's?

Rockstar hasn't published sizes, but the scope difference is categorical: the 2002 game was one city and its beaches, while GTA 6 spans the whole state of Leonida — Vice City plus keys, swampland and multiple counties. Our map comparison guide tracks the numbers.
