🔁 GTA 6 vs GTA 5: everything that's actually changed
What's genuinely new in GTA 6 vs GTA 5 — confirmed differences (dual protagonists, Leonida, modern era) separated cleanly from expectation.
How to read this guide
GTA 5 came out in 2013. GTA 6 lands November 19, 2026 — roughly thirteen years and two console generations later. Some of the differences below are confirmed by Rockstar; others are expectation based on what the trailers show and how Rockstar’s games have evolved. We label every line so you’re never guessing which is which — that’s the whole point of this site.
This guide covers everything that changed — story, world, systems, tech. If you’re only here for the map-size question, that has its own dedicated deep-dive: GTA 5 vs GTA 6 map: how much bigger is Leonida, really?
The confirmed differences
These are on the record from Rockstar’s own material:
- Two protagonists, and the first female lead in the modern era. GTA 5 had three playable criminals (Michael, Franklin, Trevor). GTA 6 has two — Jason and Lucia — and their relationship is the story, framed as a modern Bonnie-and-Clyde. That’s a different kind of design from GTA 5’s three-way switching; our dual-protagonist guide breaks down what’s known. official
- A whole state, not one city. GTA 5 was Los Santos and Blaine County (a Los Angeles analog). GTA 6 is the state of Leonida — Vice City plus the Keys, the Everglades-style Grassrivers, the gulf-coast Port Gellhorn, Mount Kalaga, and rural Ambrosia. It’s a Florida canvas spanning city, swamp, islands and coast. Every confirmed region is on the interactive map and detailed on the regions page. official
- Present day, not 2013. GTA 5 satirized early-2010s LA. GTA 6 is set in the modern era — social media, streamers, and phone culture are visibly part of the world in the trailers. official
- Consoles only at launch. GTA 5 launched on PS3/Xbox 360, then re-released across generations. GTA 6 launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only — no last-gen, and no PC version announced. (GTA 5’s PC port came ~18 months after console; see our PC page for why history says wait.) official
- A higher price and new editions. GTA 5 launched at $59.99. GTA 6 is $79.99 Standard / $99.99 Ultimate — the editions breakdown covers exactly what the extra $20 buys. official
The expected differences (analysis, not fact)
Everything here is a reasonable read from the trailers and Rockstar’s track record — clearly not confirmed mechanics:
- A denser, more detailed world. Thirteen years of hardware means crowds, interiors, weather and detail beyond GTA 5. Trailer footage points that way, but the specifics aren’t documented. How the map size compares is its own question — see how big is the map. expected
- Evolved driving and gunplay, same philosophy. Rockstar’s control feel has been consistent GTA 4 → RDR2; expect a refined version, not a reinvention. Our driving & combat guide covers the fundamentals that have transferred every time. expected
- A bigger, later online mode. GTA Online defined GTA 5’s decade. GTA 6’s online successor is completely unannounced — history (GTA Online arrived two weeks after GTA 5) suggests it trails the story launch rather than shipping with it. Online prep here. expected
- The economy and progression. If GTA 6 follows the series, it’s story missions → income property/business → big scores, and blowing early money on toys is the classic mistake — same as GTA 5. The money guide and first-week guide lay out the expected path. expected
What’s staying the same
Not everything changes, and that’s fine: the open-world sandbox, the satire, the heist structure, radio-station culture, wanted-level escapes, and the “screw around for hours between missions” DNA are all Rockstar staples that every trailer suggests carry forward. GTA 6 looks like an evolution of the formula GTA 5 perfected, not a departure from it.
The honest bottom line
The confirmed list above is genuinely a lot — a new state, a new era, a new two-hander story structure, first female lead. But the biggest gameplay differences are still expectation until people actually play it on November 19. When that happens, every “expected” line on this page becomes a tested fact, and you’ll see it updated here first. Until then: watch the countdown, and treat anyone claiming to know exactly how GTA 6 plays with the skepticism it deserves.
Frequently asked questions
What is the biggest difference between GTA 6 and GTA 5?
Three confirmed shifts: GTA 6 has two protagonists (Jason and Lucia — the series' first female lead in the modern era) instead of GTA 5's three; it covers the whole state of Leonida instead of one city and its county; and it's set in the present day rather than 2013. Anything deeper about how it plays is still expectation, not fact.
How many protagonists does GTA 6 have compared to GTA 5?
Two — Jason and Lucia, whose relationship is the story, framed as a modern Bonnie and Clyde — versus GTA 5's three-way switching between Michael, Franklin and Trevor. That's confirmed by Rockstar's own material.
Is GTA 6's map bigger than GTA 5's?
GTA 6 spans an entire state — Vice City plus five more named regions — where GTA 5 covered Los Santos and Blaine County. Rockstar hasn't published a size comparison, so exactly how much bigger is analysis rather than fact; our dedicated GTA 5 vs GTA 6 map guide covers the honest numbers.
Is GTA 6 coming to PC or last-gen consoles?
No — at launch it's PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only. There is no PS4 or Xbox One version, and no PC version has been announced; for context, GTA 5's PC port arrived roughly 18 months after its console debut.
How much does GTA 6 cost compared to GTA 5?
GTA 6 launches at $79.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Ultimate Edition, where GTA 5 launched at $59.99 in 2013. What the extra $20 buys is broken down on our editions page.
